PhaseOne Sits Down To Talk ‘Dreamscape EP’

Marking PhaseOne’s second release in quick succession on Disciple, we have the Dreamscape EP. Still reeling from the intense display of Dubstep mastery on his last Origins EP, Duffy shows no sign of slowing down with his latest offering. This EP has quickly become a staple across the Disciple family with support from Barely Alive, Virtual Riot and Dubloadz  at recent festivals. (see below)

We caught up with the man himself while he was out in LA, check the full interview below!

This EP feels like a very natural progression from ‘Origins’ which is sure to please the fans… can we expect more in this direction?

Absolutely! It was a real challenge trying to top the Origins EP but I think I’m really finding my defined/signature sound the more I try to master this Metal + Dubstep fusion. Dreamscape EP is probably my heaviest work yet and features full metal sections, punchy drum fills and of course big bass sounds.

I know you were working on the EP whilst on your recent US tour, do you find it hard to produce on the road? Or more inspiring?

I find it rather difficult to write on the road! But since the Origins EP and all the touring off the back of it I haven’t had a free weekend since March and don’t have a free weekend until like September or something, so trying to find that creative space / motivation in hotel rooms and planes is something i’m having to get used to. In saying that I’m super stoked on how this EP turned out so clearly I’m on the right track.

I see you recently announced the Dreamscape Tour in Aus/NZ. Will this also be making its way back to the US?

Straight off the back of the Australian tour I’ll be relocating to America where I already have a bunch of festival bookings and events over the US summer including Toxic Summer, Dancefestopia, Big Dub Fest, UpNorth Fest & a whole lot more TBA! So yeah Dreamscape will definitely make its way all across the US over the next few months!

Some really interesting collaborations on this EP including Japanese metal band Crystal Lake… what was it like working with them? And what other collabs can we expect in the future?

Every track on this EP is a collab which I’m stoked about! The title track ‘Dreamscape’ features Japanese metal band Crystal Lake. I met the band at my show in Tokyo when I toured Japan earlier this year and they expressed how much they liked my sound and loved what I did with ‘In Hearts Wake’ on the Origins EP, so we made it happen. Working with metal elements like distorted guitars and screaming vocals is super refreshing, dubstep is so over saturated with the same shit and to me this is one of the turns it needs to take. I see more and more producers delving into the whole Metal + Bass music crossover which is awesome!

Pasquale Rotella Responds To DJ Khaled Incident

It seems as if people can’t stop talking about DJ Khaled getting booed off stage at EDC Las Vegas last weekend. Fans, fellow artists, media outlets, and everything in between has been flooded with talk of the “sabotaged set”. Was it sabotage? Was it driven by the unsatisfied crowd? We would love to hear from someone who actually can clear up this mess so we can finally move on. Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella has finally stepped onto the PR scene after dealing with more important matters to help guide us toward the truth.

According to a statement that was given to Billboard, Pasquale says that “Due to technical difficulties beyond DJ Khaled and Insomniac’s control, Khaled was not able to perform at his scheduled time on Sunday night at EDC. He arrived on time and ready to rock the crowd, but equipment issues delayed the performance. Even though there were technical difficulties he still got on stage and showed his fans love.”

In addition to Rotella’s official statement on the matter, DJ Khaled told his complete side of the story at Power 106 FM:

So I guess it’s safe to say it was a technical difficulty that was understood in different ways among the artist and crew. DJ Khaled sure knows how to turn a singular incident into a full-blown publicity blast that keeps his name in our mouths and attention directed at him no matter our personal feelings about the exuberant rapper. Stay tuned.

deadmau5 Fires Shots at The Chainsmokers Once Again

deadmau5 & The Chainsmokers
Infamous Twitter user, deadmau5, and The Chainsmokers have never really saw eye-to-eye. From calling The Chainsmokers a “cancer” a few years ago, the feud between the two parties has been going on for a while. Yesterday, Joel Zimmerman, went to Twitter to further express his distaste for The Chainsmokers’ music by claiming them to be “shit”. In a sequence of a few tweets, Zimmerman stated of how he “made the mistake” of listening to a Chainsmokers track and was convinced that they are worse than originally anticipated. Check out the full Twitter rant below.

sorry, i just made the terrible mistake of listening to a chainsmokers song. at least the first 6 seconds of it. i was trying to do somethin

Insomniac Issues Statement On Death At EDC

Unfortunately one of the realities today of the rave festival world is that occasionally there are deaths reported. They are caused by various reasons with drug use being one of the most common, but for EDC LV the extreme heat of the Las Vegas desert brings in another dangerous factor that can put people at risk.

Were sad to report that Insomniac has confirmed one of EDC’s attendees did pass away this last weekend. The cause of death has not been reported yet but I have read heat exhaustion was a factor. Some believe this was caused by inadequate access to water and medical help. Anyone who attended EDC can confirm this was not the case, because if you were anywhere near the Las Vegas motor speedway you could not walk more than 5 minutes without seeing someone selling water, free water or medics or police. For now we hope the persons family can find peace in knowing that their loved one passed away doing what he loved. Insomniac has released a statement below:

“The unexpected passing of a loved one is tragic, and while the exact cause of this tragedy is still unknown, we do know that family and friends are grieving. It is with great sadness that we send our thoughts and condolences to the loved ones of the man who passed away after the festival had ended.

Our health and safety plan is created over several months with local agencies. Our roaming medical personnel are available twenty-four hours a day, free of charge, with the best emergency room doctors, nurses, EMTs and paramedics in the country. A full staff of security and police are also available to all attendees. We encourage everyone to approach our caring staff and ask for help if needed.”

Australian Band Parcels Enlist Daft Punk for Collaboration

Daft Punk Overnight

When it comes to Daft Punk collaborations, most people think of Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, The Weeknd, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, or other massive names with huge followings. That’s why it’s a little odd that Daft Punk just co-wrote and produced a track for an Australian group named Parcels, who only have less than 9,000 SoundCloud followers.

Parcels just release their brand new track, ‘Overnight‘ that is co-written and produced by the French duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter. The track was created in a studio at a secret location in Paris, however first little other information was given.

In an interview with NME, Parcels gave some insight into the studio session crediting Daft Punk for not having a massive ego, despite the fact that they are some of the most famous producers in the world. “From the start to the finish, it was an equal collaboration with no pressure, only a desire to create something meaningful together,” the group said.

The track itself is upbeat and groovy sounding as if it could have been a part of Daft Punk’s 2013 album, Random Access Memories. While the track doesn’t feature Daft Punk’s singing talents, Parcels’ lead singer offers his soft vocals and catchy lyrics to perfectly mesh with the funky beat.

Check out the brand new Daft Punk produced track, Parcels, below:

Skellism Finally Drop Their Massive Collab With Lil Jon & Terror Bass, “In The Pit”

Out today via Geffen Records, fans can finally listen to one of the most lit trap tracks of the year courtesy of Skellism & Lil Jon, featuring Terror Bass. “In The Pit” has been in rotation in DJ sets for the better part of this year, getting regularly rinsed out by the likes of Snails, The Chainsmokers, Carnage, and Kayzo.

The track features one of the best uses of Lil Jon vocals in an EDM track we’ve heard in a long while, since “Prison Riot” or even “Turn Down For What.” In the realm of hard trap which has been consistently dominated by acts like 4B and SAYMYNAME, Skellism have put up some serious competition.

Check it out below.

DJ Khaled Addresses EDC Incident During Radio Q&A

On the final day of EDC, DJ Khaled’s performance was cut short due to technical difficulties. Of course, due to his own particular brand of infamy, rumors began flying that he was late, or that he was throwing a tantrum about this or that backstage, and some blogs even erroneously called his career over.

As the incident has sort of become talk of the town, Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella even spoke out about it, saying, “[DJ Khaled] arrived on time and ready to rock the crowd, but equipment issues delayed the performance. Even though there were technical difficulties he still got on stage and showed his fans love.”

This was further corroborated by DJ Khaled in an open format Q&A with Power 106 FM. When it came time to address the elephant in the room, Khaled was graceful and calm in his response – which just happens to be completely at odds with his response to the situation on Instagram.

What it boils down to is that Khaled was on time, EDC didn’t have his turntables, they couldn’t get the sound to work during his set for whatever reason, and he took what little time he had left in his set, 10-15 minutes worth, to play for his fans and show them love.

See his explanation below.

Deadmau5 Thinks The Chainsmokers Are Shit. In Other News, Deadmau5 Is Canadian.

Master of all things troll and one of our favorite Canadians deadmau5 had to voice his opinion on The Chainsmokers once again yesterday. In a completely unsolicited volley of tweets against the duo, deadmau5 stated that they were genuinely shit. Of course, we never ask for deadmau5 tweets, they just sort of end up in our laps whether we want them or not…

Father Sues EDC Promoters Insomniac & Live Nation After Son’s Death In 2015

Nicholas Tom, 24, died in 2015 while attending EDC Las Vegas. The official cause of death was ruled to be intoxication from ecstasy a month later. Now, Tom’s father has filed a lawsuit against EDC promoters Insomniac and Live Nation for wrongful death and negligence.

Tom’s father, Terry, is claiming that there were “scarce and understaffed medical facilities.” He further claims that the volunteers on site had little medical experience, and “insufficient access to water.”

The health and safety of its headliners is Insomniac’s #1 concern when creating festivals. There are always plenty of water stations available to attendees and trained, medical professionals are always on call at all times of night.

In 2016, Insomniac created a full, functioning hospital at EDC Orlando, staffed with ten doctors and more than 100 medical volunteers.

We’re awaiting a comment from Insomniac on the lawsuit.
