Introduction

This article explains Meta’s content policies and delivery requirements for music made available on Facebook and Instagram. It outlines the eligibility criteria for rights holders, describes Meta’s two key delivery feeds, and lists content types that are not accepted.

Overview of Meta Delivery Channels

Music distributed to Meta platforms is delivered through two distinct feeds:

Facebook Fingerprinting Feed – Supplies reference files used for automatic audio matching against user-generated content (UGC) uploaded by platform users.

Facebook Audio Library Feed – Supplies music tracks that are discoverable and directly usable within Meta’s suite of products, including Reels, Stories, and other in-app media tools.

For content to be accessible across all Meta products and features, delivery to both feeds is required.

Rights Eligibility Requirements

To deliver content to Meta, rights holders must meet these conditions:

Exclusive Rights Ownership: You must own and/or control exclusive rights to the sound recordings in all applicable territories.

Clearance for All Uses: All delivered content must be cleared for both UGC fingerprinting and detection (Fingerprinting Feed), and

End-user availability (Audio Library Feed).

Submissions that don’t meet these requirements may be rejected.

Ineligible Content Types

Meta will block delivery attempts containing any of the following:

Sound effects (SFX)

Spoken word or speech (including poetry, monologues, dialogues)

Podcasts, radio shows, or album commentary

Sound-a-likes (imitations without proper licenses)

Illegitimate or fraudulently sourced tracks

Unauthorized DJ or continuous mixes

Production library music (catalogues for sync or scoring)

Public domain works

Insufficiently distinct recordings (white noise, static, indistinguishable loops)

Ambient, meditation, yoga, or sleep music

Karaoke recordings

Meta may update this list or its evaluation criteria without notice. Rights holders should monitor delivery status and review policy updates regularly.

Key Notes

Accurate Metadata: Ensure all content metadata matches rights ownership details. Inconsistencies can result in rejection or takedown.

Zero-Tolerance for Misrepresentation: Repeated violations can lead to wider delivery restrictions.

Next Steps for Artists & Labels

Think of a music distributor as a crucial middleman between you (the artist) and the digital streaming platforms (DSPs) like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal.

These major platforms don’t accept music directly from millions of individual artists. It would be logistically impossible. Instead, they work with a limited number of approved distribution companies that aggregate and deliver music on a massive scale.

A distributor’s job is to:

Deliver your audio files and metadata (song title, artist name, genre, etc.) to all the DSPs.

Collect the royalties you earn from streams and downloads.

Pay you your share of those royalties.

Why Can’t I Just Upload My Music Myself?
You can! But only to a very limited number of places.

SoundCloud and Bandcamp allow direct uploads. They are fantastic platforms for community building and direct-to-fan sales.

YouTube allows you to upload videos directly.

However, to get on the “big four”—Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer—you must use a distributor. This also includes getting your music into TikTok and Instagram Reels, which are now essential tools for music discovery.

Here’s a simplified look at the journey your music takes:

Upload & QC: You upload your audio, artwork, and metadata. Our system checks for errors.

Delivery: We securely deliver your release to our network of digital streaming platforms (DSPs).

Processing: Each DSP (like Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) processes and approves your release on their end. This can take 1-3 weeks.

Go-Live: Your music goes live on the store’s release date!

Reporting: We collect royalties from all stores and report them to you in your monthly statements.

In the ever-evolving world of music streaming, artists and labels rely on platforms to showcase their work and earn royalties. However, the rise of artificial streaming has introduced challenges that compromise the integrity of the industry. In this post, we explain why accounts may be blocked and payments withheld when fraudulent activity is detected, and how creators can avoid these pitfalls.

Understanding Artificial Streaming

Artificial streaming refers to any attempt to manipulate play counts, follower numbers, or engagement metrics using deceptive tactics. Streaming platforms have strict policies against such practices, as they distort the true popularity of content and disrupt the fair distribution of royalties.

Examples of artificial streaming include:

  • Using bots or automated systems to generate fake streams.
  • Hiring click farms or other third-party services that promise to boost play counts or followers.
  • Manipulating algorithms to falsely enhance the performance of music.

Why Accounts Are Blocked

When artificial streaming is detected, platforms may take immediate action to block the associated account. This is necessary to protect the fairness of the music ecosystem and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Account blocks help maintain trust with genuine artists and audiences while discouraging dishonest practices.

Why Payments Are Withheld

Royalties are intended to reward authentic engagement. Payments for streams that result from fraudulent activity are withheld because:

  • Major streaming platforms and royalty organizations do not compensate for fake or artificially inflated streams.
  • Artificial streams violate terms of service, making them ineligible for payment.

Holding payments in such cases is essential to ensure that revenue distribution reflects legitimate listens and true audience interest.

What to Do if Your Account Is Blocked

If your account has been blocked, and you believe it was done in error:

  1. Contact Support: Reach out to the platform with detailed information and supporting evidence that verifies the authenticity of your streams.
  2. Provide Documentation: Share data or reports demonstrating how your audience was built organically.
  3. Await Review: A thorough investigation will be conducted, and a resolution will be provided.

Note: If fraudulent activity is confirmed, the account may remain permanently blocked, and withheld payments will not be released.

How to Avoid Artificial Streaming

To prevent issues with artificial streaming, follow these best practices:

  • Avoid third-party services that guarantee streams or followers in exchange for payment.
  • Focus on organic marketing strategies, such as engaging with fans through social media, email newsletters, and live performances.
  • Use legitimate promotional tools provided by reputable platforms to grow your audience.

Our Commitment to Fair Play

We are dedicated to fostering a transparent and ethical music environment where artists can thrive. By adhering to authentic growth strategies and avoiding artificial streaming, creators can build lasting careers rooted in genuine fan support.

Artificial streaming undermines the music industry’s integrity. Let’s work together to promote fairness, transparency, and authentic artistry.
